How to Apply for Marriage Registration?

1. Identity Documents of Both Parties

  • For Taiwanese nationals: National Identification Card.
  • For foreigners: Passport, Residence Permit, or Entry/Exit Permit, etc.
  • For Mainland China residents: Taiwan Area Entry/Exit Permit with the stamp “Interview Passed, Please Use for Marriage Registration” issued by the National Immigration Agency, Ministry of the Interior.

2. Household Registration Book of Taiwanese national, one photo taken within the last 2 years

  • (Photo specifications can be checked on the Ministry of the Interior, Department of Household Registration website: http://www.ris.gov.tw/)
  • Seal (signature is also acceptable).

3. Procedures for Taiwanese nationals and Mainland China residents or specific nationals without permanent residence permits issued by the National Immigration Agency to register marriage in Taiwan:

(a) Mainland China residents:

  • Must complete marriage registration in Mainland China, bring marriage certificate to the National Immigration Agency for an interview. After passing the interview, bring the verified marriage certificate by the Straits Exchange Foundation to any Household Registration Office to register.

(b) Specific nationals:

  • Must complete marriage registration in their home country, bring the marriage certificate for verification and interview at the local Taiwanese embassy/consulate. After passing the interview, bring the verified marriage certificate (with verified or certified Chinese translation) and a declaration of Chinese name of the foreign spouse to any Household Registration Office to register.

4. For Taiwanese nationals and specific nationals with permanent residence permits issued by the National Immigration Agency or other foreigners marrying in Taiwan:

  • Bring the marriage contract (with signatures of two witnesses, etc.), the foreign spouse’s declaration of Chinese name, verified marriage status documents and Chinese translation from the local Taiwanese embassy/consulate, and register in person at any Household Registration Office.
